The Mermaid 美人鱼 2016- China-Hong Kong

DUE TO COPYRIGHT- WE HAD TO REMOVE IMAGES :[ - SORRY!

The Mermaid 美人鱼
is a Chinese/Hong Kong, comedy directed by the well known director, Stephen Chow. Having only been released a little over 2 weeks ago, it has already made a splash in China. Haha you see what I did there?? As a newly released film, The Mermaid has already climb to the top of movie charts, landing at the highest grossing film in all of China. If that doesn't tell you this film is good, then I don't know what will. Of course, this review will help as well!
The Mermaid actually made it into our top new films of 2016. Check out the other films HERE!

The Mermaid is showing in select theatres in the U.S., and I was lucky enough to be able to attend it. I had no idea what to expect from this film, no idea what genre it was, so I was surprised when it turned out to be a laugh out loud comedy, with an obvious darker undertone.

Okay guys, so the last post was more of a recap than a review. We’ve had some requests for an actual review, so here’s my attempt at one!

Sorry this is late. I'm experiencing technical difficulties, so things have been a little rough. Thanks for your understanding.

For convenience purposes, I’ve taken to referring to Alice/Seiko as just Alice. It can get a bit confusing, not to mention tiring, constantly typing Alice/Seiko. I’ve tried my best to make everything as easy as possible to understand, but I do realize that reading something, as opposed to watching it, can be ambiguous at times.

If you have any questions, please comment to let us know!

The Great Hypnotist 催眠大师 2014- China

Directed by Leste Chen, The Great Hypnotist 催眠大师, is a Chinese mystery/thriller film released in 2014. I was able to see this film at the annual Dallas Asian Film Festival in 2015. If you live in the area, definitely check it out this coming year. For Asian movie lovers, they always have a ton of great films every year.

Now back to the review! The Great Hypnotist wasn't an award winning film, or a top grossing film for China, unlike other films Lights, Camera, Asia has recently reviewed, however, this film is still a very intriguing and interesting film with very beautiful sets. It definitely will hold your attention, however, If you are really good at guessing the endings of films (like myself), you will most likely figure out the big plot twist at the end. At least it tried!

Ode to My Father 국제시장 2014- South Korea

In 2014, Ode to My Father (국제시장), directed by Youn Je-Kyun, was released in South Korea. At the time of its release it had mixed reviews and even came upon some controversy claiming the film tried to idealize the authoritarian rule of the past. However, that did not stop this movie from climbing the ladder of success, where it sits as the 2nd highest grossing film in all of South Korean cinema history. Most of its success comes from the nostalgic feeling the movie gives off which attracted many older generations to revisit a time they once lived in. Director Youn even claimed most of the film was a tribute to his father, using his actual parents names for the two protagonists. Director Youn was quoted saying, "I hope the film serves as the channel for communication between the old and young generation," and I believe it does just that.

The Thieves 도둑들 2012- South Korea

The Thieves (도둑들) is a South Korea, high action packed film, released in 2012 by Director Choi Dong-hoon. At the time of its release, it sold 12.9 million tickets, making it the 4th highest grossing film in the Korean box office. It is no surprise this movie had such a great success with it's all star cast, which included Jun Ji-Hyun (My Sassy Girl, Assasination), Kim Yun-Seok (The Chaser), Lee Jung-Jae (Assasination, The Housemaid),  Kim Soo Hyun (Secretly, Greatly, My Love From the Star) and Oh Dal-Su (Old Boy, Assassination). You might be thinking, Hey! a lot of these actors were also in the 2015 film, Assassination. You are correct! Director Choi rounded up many of the same actors from The Thieves to perform in his most recent and very successful box-office hit. If you haven't already, check out Lights, Camera, Asia's post on Assassination here

Like Father, Like Son そして父になる 2013 - Japan

Like Father, Like Son (そして父になる) is the 2013 Japanese drama, directed by Hirokazu Kareeda. This was an extremely favorable film at it's time of release. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it won Jury Prize. It won both Roger's People's Choice Award at the 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival and the Wuaki TV Audience Award at the 2013 San Sebastian International Film Festival. The film also has caught the eye of Director, Stephen Spielberg, and supposably Dreamworks has bought the film rights for a remake!

Like Father, Like Son is a thought-provoking film about the Nonomiya family, made up of Ryota (Masaharu Fukuyama), the successful businessmen who focuses more on work than family, Midori, his wife, and their adorable 6 year old son, Keita. Ryota is strong-willed and wants his son to follow in his foot steps, that is until the hospital calls the family with news that their son was switch at birth. They must make a life changing decision to either keep the boy they have been raising as their own, or switch the child for their biological son.

The Nonomiya family is soon introduce to the Saiki family, a family of five, including their son, Ryusei. Compared to the Nonomiyas, the Saiki family are small town folks, with much less money. However, they seem to understand relationships with their children far better than Ryota does.
