The Beauty Inside 뷰티 인사이드 2015 - South Korea

The Beauty Inside (뷰티 인사이드) is a 2015 South Korean romance film from first time film director, Baek Jong Yul. As a director whose career only spanned commercial advertisements previous to this film, I am extremely impressed with his ability to direct and create such a wonderful film to watch. The Beauty Inside is actually based off of a 2012 American "social film" released by Intel and Toshiba that included interactive storytelling for viewers. Upon the release of the South Korean film, it had already pre-sold its distribution rights to 11 other Asian countries. I absolutely loved this film...lets see why!

The Beauty Inside is a story of the furniture designer , Woo-jin, who has since woken up everyday as a different person since his 18th birthday. Some days he wakes up as a young man, a woman, a child, an old man and sometimes even as a foreigner (Chinese, Japanese, American etc.), but he is still the same person on the inside. Living alone, with only contact with his business partner and best friend Sang Beck (Lee Dong Hwi) his "condition" starts trouble when he meets, and ultimately ends up falling in love with Hong E-Soo (Han Hyo-joo).

The first Woo-Jin the audience meets is played by Kim Dae-Mung followed by 21 other actors including Korean drama You're Beautiful star, Park Shin Hye, Lee Beom Soo (200 Pound Beauty), Koh Ah-Sung (Snowpiercer), Kim Hee-Won (The Man from Nowhere) and Japanese actress Juri Ueno. This film has a large cast for the ever changing role of the love struck Woo-Jin. One thing I absolutely loved about this film was that you never get to see who Woo-jin really is. Even when the film flashes back to his 18th birthday, the audience is never given the opportunity of seeing what he looked like. I think this was a good choice, not allowing the audience to get attached to what he looked like, but who he is.

At one point during the film, I was very worried that someone was going to die or have some illness, but I can safely say, this is not one of those depressingly, heartbreaking romance films. I honestly loved the ending. The only thing I thought this film lacked was going more in depth with their relationship. Yes, sometimes Woo-Jin is an old man or a woman, but the film never explains gender identity or the romantic relationships E-Soo would have with Woo-Jin on days he is not a super good looking young man.

While Woo-Jin is super good looking A LOT in this film, it is a shame that this is the only time the film goes more in depth of their romantic relationship. However, I guess to viewers it is more appealing to see romance between two good looking people and not a young woman and a old man. If the film didn't just skim the surface of romantic film traits, this film could have offered a more realistic view of what these two characters would actually have to endure in a situation like this.

Nonetheless, this film is still such a sweet, sweet movie to watch. I love the idea behind this film. If you enjoy super sappy, emotional movies...check this out NOW! The Beauty Inside is currently streaming on Netflix.
