Uncontrollably Fond 함부로 애틋하게 2016- Korea EP. 2 Review

This definitely isn't MY No Eul. - Uncontrollably Fond - Ep. 2

Summary (Spoilers if you haven’t seen it):

Uncontrollably Fond Episode 2 starts off with No Eul running down the street, confused? This is a flashback dear friends to the year 2006. She stops to help an old lad push a giant cart up a hill and gives her a hat and scarf to stay warm. Taking the cart from the lady she tells her to go on a date J Awe such an innocent and sweet No Eul.

Stopping at a stall, she tells a little boy that he does not need to pay for food. The stall-man gets angry and tells her that they are living and debt. Is this No Eul’s appa (Dad)? A girl runs up to No Eul as her dad’s complaining about all the money she has given away by not letting people pay and that he could be living better etc etc. Apparently her friend is getting beat up by some boys behind the school. What kind of man beats up a girl?

No Eul’s dad tells her she better not leave but she does. Cursing her, he says she better fall on ice. A little later she does, hahaha. It’s a pretty funny scene.

Cut to Shin Joon who has gotten suspended. His mother goes to the school to say that Shin Joon was protecting a girl and how could they suspend him. The girl is with her and she says that no one was harassing her. Obviously the girl lied but it’s so uncomfortable to watch. Apparently the girl’s family was paid to keep quiet since the families of the boys tormenting her were rich. The mother gets so angry she slaps the girl who begins to cry. Shin Joon’s mother then begs the principle to not suspend her son since he wants to be a prosecutor.

We then see the rich boys who have obviously been a fight. Shin Joon appears and they get all arrogant. He says he should beat up one of them completely to get a full expulsion. Skip to the teacher/police office? hitting Shin Joon on the head with a file and reprimanding him. Shin Joon grabs his hand and the mystery man from episode 1 jumps in.

Okay, seriously who is this guy? Turns out it’s his uncle. He argues with the policeman about Shin Joon’s father being upset about this until Shin Joon tells him to shut up. We see the prosecutor, much younger now, on TV. Shin Joon and his Uncle are in a restaurant. Uncle asks what Shin Joon would do if that man was his father, referring to the prosecutor. Shin Joon replies that he would kill him for throwing him out. Uncle replies that it wasn’t his fault and that Shin Joon’s mother never told the prosecutor about Shin Joon. GASP!

Now it has been confirmed that the prosecutor is Shin Joon’s appa. Shin Joon is confused his Uncle says that it was just a probability. Uncle stops Shin Joon from going to his mother to ask because she would throw a fit.

Shin Joon walks home and we find out that his father hid that he was going to law school and worked as a waiter at a bar (umm why did he hide it?) His mom worked in the kitchen and they hit it off. His dad was obsessed with studying. A man showed up and told his mom that Shin Joon’s dad was the best law student and that some woman who worked in a pub wasn’t good enough for him.
Shin Joon’s mother sits outside their house angry and near tears. She’s angry about him and school. She cooks dinner but doesn’t let him eat. We hear Uncles voice in the background that she wanted him to become a prosecutor even though his grades were bad so that she could face his father and say “I raised him so well, even without you. So There.”

She reprimands him about saving the girl and hits him. He says he probably went crazy because he found out she was working at a bar to help pay for his tutor. She chokes on this news.
Shin Joon goes to his room and begins to study. His mother lets the tears slip out as quietly as she can and falls asleep. Make your momma proud Shin Joon!

We find out Shin Joon is pretty popular with a bus scene. The girls are all in a tizzy and some guy tries to recruit him. (I mean of course. He’s gorg) Shin Joon ignores them and continues to study. As he studies girl’s put notes on his desk but they all end up in the trash.

Enter No Eul. THE FIRST MEETING. It’s here and so soon! No Eul calls out to him and Shin Joon looks around like, ‘Who me?’. (Yes you it’s the girl of your dreams right in front of you silly!) No Eul asks if he is ignoring her because she gave him seven notes to see her. (Ah! It was her!) He tells her she is not his type, No Eul replies that he isn’t her type either. (Touché)

Apparently he dumped her friend Na Ra and she has been crying nonstop and not eating. She asks him what he is going to do about it and he replies why should I have to do anything? She said it’s because of him that she is on her deathbed. He replies that she should just die then (Wow Shin Joon). No Eul replies that if she dies, she’ll kill him (Get it girl!) She asks him to have pity, rekindle their love and break up with her later. He asks her how much she is being paid to do this and then takes her temperature. He tells her to go to the hospital because she is crazy.

Cut to No Ra crying her eyes out. No Eul brings her food to eat and she says that she will just die (drama queen). No Ra says that No Eul is lucky that she is immune to Shin Joon’s charms. We see an even younger No Eul walk past the 2006 No Eul. She happily steps into a salon to get her hair done. The stylist asks her why she is in today and she says she is going to confess to a guy that she likes and to give her a hair style that will blow him away. No Eul calls and asks to borrow No Ra’s pink dress and she’ll tell her why later.

No Eul with her cut hair style practices confessing to Shin Joon. Its super cute scene and all about how their fated to be together (So true!) She turns to corner to No Ra’s house and guess who is there?! Shin Joon, womp womp. He hugs No Ra and poor No Eul looks so crushed. Current No Eul looks at her past self and smiles.

No Eul calls her dad on the way home and he jokingly asks if she is drunk.  Or if she needs money for a friend. No Eul mouths as he says this and asks him to buy her alcohol. He calls her crazy and tells her to go to bed. As she is walking down a hill she sees her dad pilling a cart with a bag in his hand. It’s soju, hahaha what a great dad. No Eul pulls her hood up and tells whoever she is on the phone with that he has a date with her dad. Total aww here.

As she is turned around we hear car tires and a thud. Oh no. Please don’t be true. Her dad got hit by a car! A lady gets out of her car and checks on him. She freaks out when she doesn’t see him moving and gets into her car. No Eul runs down the hill yelling “APPA! APPA!” The girl looks over her shoulder, closes the door and drives off. No Eul runs after her screaming at her to stop. She doesn’t.

Cue phone call to the prosecutor. It’s an assemblyman. His daughter got herself into trouble and he needs the prosecutors help. Uh oh, I have a bad feeling about this you guys. No Eul’s father is in the hospital in a coma. She gets a call that the person who hit her father came and confessed.

A man confessed. He apologizes and No Eul says no it was a woman and recites the license plate number (dang girl, you sharp). She asks him why he is lying. Cue prosecutor. He gets off the subway to rain and guess who offers him an umbrella? Shin Joon, that’s right.

They talk as they walk and he explains that he wants to become a prosecutor and go to the same college as him. Shin Joon is positively glowing. The prosecutor says that he must be smart and his parents must be proud. We find out in this scene that the prosecutor has a kid. The lines, I envy your parents come out…. little does he know. He says he can’t leave debts and asks Shin Joon if he has time.

Cut to No Eul throwing something at a car? Well, this is certainly out of character…. Sort of. The police converge and hold her in a room. The prosecutor walks in. So it was his car. He asks if his car wronged her in anyway. She said she came here over 20 times and he avoided her so she did this to get his attention. He sends everyone out of the room.

She asks why he won’t investigate her father’s hit and run and the person who confessed isn’t the true murder. He says he isn’t in charge of this and can’t get involved. She says a cop told her he intervened and after that everything changed.  The car, testimony etc. Uh oh, tread carefully No Eul this guy seems dangerous. He tells her to tell the cop to do his job and stop lying. She responds with the cop telling her that the higher ups intervened and there was no use in trying to fight back. So she should just accept the settlement money.

The prosecutor tells her to go back and he’s sorry because he knows she came a long way. No Eul says that she never told where she came from or where she lives (so sharp!) and that he must’ve already knew who she was. The prosecutor looks frazzled and tells her that he has never seen her uniform before and assumed she was from far away. (Nice save)

No Eul sees Shin Joon who is still on cloud nine from talking to his dad. She asks him why he is so happy when he is causing someone to suffer. They spar back and forth and he trips her as she walks away (how mature). She says the country is going into the crapper because a-holes like him are trying to become prosecutors. She says how can someone like him become a prosecutor when he can’t even make it into the top 200 just ass his prosecutor father walks into the scene (nice timing No Eul).
No Eul tells him to study until he dies and that he’ll probably become a prosecutor when he’s 80. The prosecutor gives him a girl and says he’ll sign it. Shin Joon tells him next time when he brings him his grades.

No Eul gets on the bus. Shin Joon follows and kicks out the girl who is sitting next to No Eul. Shin Joon tells No Eul to seduce him and make him so crazy he gives up on being a prosecutor. No Eul looks at him like he is nuts, goes to leave and Shin Joon pulls her back say if she can’t seduce him, he will seduce her.

Scene change to No Eul passing out fliers for witnesses to her father’s hit-and-run. People throw them on the ground (how can people be so hateful?). She puts posters up around town as well.
No Eul is leaving school and there is a commotion at the front gate. Guess who it is looking super cute with a giant teddy bear?  Shin Joon. Who is he waiting for? No Ra? People seem to think so. Nope, he’s here for No Eul.

No Eul goes to walk past but Shin Joon grabs her arm. He says that he cut class because it is their 100th day anniversary. He gives her the bear, tells her happy 100th day and that he loves her. Rubbing her head, he calls her cute and Na Ri falls down. She calls him crazy and he covers her mouth. To Na Ri he tells her he is sorry and to find a better guy than him.

Cut to Shin Joon eating a laughing. It’s a bit creepy. Apparently he is having a lot of fun with No Eul and says that he got even and she never should’ve messed with him. He asks his uncle why he is so evil and who did he take after (we know, the prosecutor!). His Uncle thinks he’s gone crazy from studying.

No Eul is back at the hospital with her brother visiting her dad. She is complaining about Shin Joon and how she is getting bullied. She asks her dad to wake up to get revenge and her brother asks him to wake up to get pizza. As they are arguing something happens to their dad’s monitor. They call in the nurses and her father passes. Her brother cries over her father and it’ll rip your heart out as he begs his sister to save their dad.

Shin Joon sees No Eul’s poster for the hit and run. Then he overhears two guys talking about the sweet pancake guy dying and how they feel bad for No Eul. Apparently they can’t even hold a funeral because they have no money. They had to flee because to the debt collectors and that No Eul’s mother passed form an illness a long time ago. Shin Joon’s face is definitely full of regret.
We see him at the funeral home where the friends of No Eul’s dad are shaming three men – the debt collectors. Shin Joon looks shocked and appalled (probably about his previous behavior). He lights incense and bows to No Eul’s father.

The prosecutor hears about the death and he drinks with the assemblyman. He says he won’t forget how he helped him and that his daughter was quite shaken by the matter (She’s shaken?! Puh-lease). There’s an engagement between the prosecutor’s child and the assembly man’s child.
Shin Joon tries calling No Eul but her phone is disconnected. Time passes by and Shin Joon makes the top 100 at school. His mother brings food for the staff and teachers at school and thanks the Principal. Shin Joon replaces the No Eul’s poster and tries calling her again. Someone answers and he asks for No Eul. She says it’s not her and to stop calling. He crosses out her phone number on the poster and writes his instead. Then scratches it out and takes the poster down.

He gets a call. It’s No Eul. She thanks him for carrying her father’s photo at the funeral.

Cut to the end of episode 1.

She asks him if he change his mind, and she tells him she is doing this just to make money. He asks her “Do you not know who I am?” Being coy, she says of course everyone knows you.

“No Eul. Do you really not know who I am,” he yells.

She replies, “I do know who you are, you son of a bitch”.

She asks if she had told him who she was, would he have done the documentary? She says no, he’d probably have been an even bigger jerk. Just like a long time ago. She thanks him for the money and says she will use it well, bows and walks away.

He turns and watches her leave just as she collapses. He thinks to himself that there is no way this woman is No Eul. That she definitely isn’t his No Eul.

[End]

First Impressions:

Seriously guys this episode tugs on your heart strings. I am definitely feeling this drama more in episode 2 than I was in episode 1. No Eul is fabulously witty and sharp. She is strong willed and I love it. We see some evolution in Shin Joon’s character from being a delinquent to studying hard to feeling guilt when he realizes No Eul’s dad has died and she had to flee from the debt collectors.
A lot of my questions from Episode 1 were answered and now I know why the prosecutor was giving me really bad vibes. How sick is it to pretty much be toasting the death of a man? It’s unreal. I don’t believe this is end of this twisted part of the storyline. For some reason I feel it’s going to get worse (the prosecutor is going to do much worse).

I’m seriously impressed with the acting of the little brother. He definitely felt the pain that his character was feeling and expressed it marvelously for someone his age. I can’t wait to see what other dramas he will be in the future! Major props to the filing and editing crew in this episode. There were some really awesome shots especially the scene where Shin Joon is learning about No Eul’s father. He’s against a wall right next to his reflection and the double sad face of Shin Joon really makes an impression on the viewer. Almost as if his pain is two-fold.

I am excited for the rest of the drama and I am hoping it doesn’t die down at all. I tend to get bored when the plot line gets predictable.

It’s times like these that I realize I should get DramaFever Prime. I’m hooked and I don’t like the waiting game.

Burning Questions:

We still don’t know who the ajusshi is, and I have a feel like there is more to the Shin Joon and No Eul background story. We have learned why No Eul has so much debt but not really how her father got into debt. I don’t think this is as important to the story line though. Still don’t know about No Eul’s employment status and what happened between Shin Joon and his mother.

Star of this episode:

I was going to choose No Eul for this episode but Shin Joon’s character had good development. He goes from being a delinquent to studying hard for a goal, and from arrogant to sincere feelings of guilt. He starts to fall for her. I believe it is due to her strong nature and how she didn’t complain when her life was in shambles. She held her own and that’s why he is so adamant that this woman is not his No Eul. I also love that he thinks she is his (even though it’s a bit too possessive).

I would like to see why Shin Joon’s character regresses to the arrogant guy he has become or maybe that is just who he is deep down. I feel like he is a big softy though

Music:

A Little Braver by New Empire

An Australian song but a good song none-the-less

Predictions:

I have a feeling the reason Shin Joon and his mother don’t get a long is because he stopped studying to become a prosecutor. I believe this may be linked to No Eul and Shin Joon’s father. Maybe Shin Joon learns how his father was involved in the cover up of No Eul’s father’s hit-and-run.
